Led by the All India Kisan Sabha, the march began after local officials failed to meet their demands.Mumbai is bracing for large-scale protest as thousands of farmers and tribal communities have begun a long march from Nashik towards the state capital, demanding land rights and resolution of long-pending agrarian issues. The march, led by the CPI(M)-affiliated All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), began on Sunday after an agitation outside the Dindori tehsil office in Nashik district, as per a Deccan Chronicle report. Protesters carrying red flags decided to march on foot to Mumbai after officials failed to provide assurances on their demands. The rally, under the leadership of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has continued for the past two days and entered Thane district on Tuesday. As the march reached Thane, it was joined by leaders and activists from the Thane–Palghar region, including MLA Vinod Nikole, Kiran Gahala, Radka Kalangada and Chandrakant Ghorkhana. The protest is steadily growing as it advances towards Mumbai, raising concerns of disruption in parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in the coming days.Delegation to Meet Chief Minister Former MLA J P Gavit said a delegation comprising himself, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and AIKS national president Ashok Dhawale, Kisan Sabha national joint secretary Ajit Navale and MLA Vinod Nikole will hold discussions with the chief minister and other concerned ministers once the march reaches Mumbai. The delegation plans to press for concrete assurances from the state government on farmers’ demands. Gavit said tribal farmers from Peth, Surgana, Kalwan and Trimbakeshwar talukas are participating in the agitation to draw attention to unresolved issues related to land rights, irrigation facilities and forest claims. These regions are drought-prone, and farmers have been demanding the construction of large check dams on west-flowing rivers and their tributaries to ensure reliable irrigation for agriculture.

BJP set to control coffers of Nashik civic body for 5 yrs

Nashik: After securing a decisive mandate in the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections by winning 72 of the 122 seats, the BJP is set to gain firm control over the civic body’s financial and administrative decision-making for the next five years. This dominance will be reinforced with the formation of the standing committee, widely regarded as the most powerful wing of the corporation, which shapes policy direction, approves expenditure, and prioritises development projects. The 16-member standing committee is formed on the basis of proportional representation, with one seat allotted for approximately every 7.6 corporators. Under this formula, the BJP is poised to secure 10 of the 16 seats, placing it in an unchallenged position. This strength will also enable the party to elect the standing committee chairperson, a post that requires the backing of at least nine members. The chairperson holds significant influence, as the role controls the allocation of civic funds and determines the fate of major infrastructure and development proposals.Other parties will secure representation strictly in line with their numbers in the general body. The Shiv Sena, which has 26 corporators, is expected to get three seats. The NCP, with 4 corporators, will get one seat, while the Sena (UBT) will have two members in the committee. The MNS, with a solitary corporator, and the lone independent member will be left out. Now, even before the committee takes shape, procedural steps remain. The new mayor must be elected first, with the state urban development department set to announce the mayoral reservation through a draw of lots.Once the mayor assumes charge, group leaders of each party will propose names for the standing committee, after which the general body will formally approve the list. The election of the standing committee Chairperson will follow.Meanwhile, reservations for the mayoral post for Nashik and other municipal corporations in the state are to be declared through a draw of lots by the state urban development department in Mumbai on Thursday (Jan 21). The movements for the election to mayoral posts will gather momentum thereafter.
